Before a backdrop of red, white and blue, nearly 40 students representing nine area high schools were recognized for their plans to serve our nation during the Community Salute to Service on April 29, 2026.
Lt. Gen. Johnny Davis, Commanding General of the United States Army Recruiting Command, served as the keynote speaker.
“The first step is always the hardest,” Davis said. “But now that you have begun your military journey, you have a world of possibilities, opportunities and adventures ahead of you. You can expect to be challenged – physically, mentally and emotionally. This will teach you to be resourceful, to overcome difficult things, to be resilient, and to be brave and determined.”
Davis advised the students to remain positive, value their service, invest in others, keep connected with their families and remember the importance of relationships.
Dr. Karla Eslinger, Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education, spoke about Missouri’s ongoing commitment to military families. During the event, she also reinforced the significance of the students’ decision.
“Choosing to serve reflects discipline, responsibility and a strong sense of purpose,” Eslinger said. “Your commitment is recognized and deeply appreciated.”
The evening also bridged generations of service. Waynesville R-VI Superintendent Hilary Bales, who served as emcee, honored Henry Rothbauer, a 100-year-old World War II Navy veteran.
“In 1944, during World War II, Henry Rothbauer left his family farm to serve his country in the South Pacific aboard the troop transport ship J. Franklin Bell. He stands here today at 100 years young as a living reminder of courage, resilience and service. The freedoms we enjoy today were secured by individuals like him,” said Bales as she presented Rothbauer with a plaque.
Maj. Gen. Christopher Beck, Commanding General of the Maneuver Support Center of Excellence at Fort Leonard Wood, was presented with a photo memory book in appreciation for his partnership with the district.
“While your time with us may be coming to a close, your impact will not,” Bales said. “Thank you for investing in our students, for supporting our schools and community, and for showing us all what service truly looks like. You will always be a part of our story.”
Col. Robin Mestemacher, U.S. Marine Corps Detachment, Lt. Col. Kevin McKinley, U.S. Air Force 368th Training Squadron, Lt. Jason Nickman, U.S. Navy Center for Seabees and Facilities Engineering Detachment and Missouri State Representatives Bill Hardwick, Bennie Cook, Don Mayhew also helped recognize the students on stage.
Students received a letter from U.S. Congressman Mark Alford and a Certificate of Appreciation from Missouri State Representatives Tara Peters, Hardwick, Cook and Mayhew.
