Last week, we held our monthly city council meeting, where several meaningful updates, appointments and ordinances were proposed and unanimously approved, reflecting the ongoing progress and dedication within our community.
Honoring outstanding volunteers
One of the highlights of the evening was formal recognition of our Tax Center volunteers, who served more than 1,000 patrons in just three and a half months. Led by Sherry Hopkins, this incredible team included Anneka Kirk, Rick Swirzer, Jiyeon Yoon and Phyllis Snyder. Each received a city cup, a city coin and the prestigious Mayor’s Route 66 Meritorious Award for Excellence, an honor I will only present 66 times in total. Their dedication and generosity made a significant impact on our community, and we look forward to welcoming them back next year.
Army partnership recognition
I also had the honor of sharing with the Council and citizens a plaque I received at the Pentagon on behalf of Waynesville recognizing us with the Army Partnership Award. This historic recognition celebrates our strong alliance with Fort Leonard Wood. A joint recognition ceremony with Fort Leonard Wood and Saint Robert will take place at 9:00 AM on June 13th, and the public is welcome to attend.
New appointment to Planning and Zoning Board
Congratulations to Earl Arnold, who was unanimously approved by the council to serve on the Planning and Zoning Board. Earl brings valuable insight and experience, and we’re proud to have him join the team.
Sales tax presentation and public engagement
City Financial Officer Amber Box delivered an in-depth presentation regarding the proposed 1 cent emergency services sales tax. This measure is designed to support police, fire and 911 services. The presentation will be made publicly available, and we will host a Town Hall this summer to ensure residents can ask questions and stay informed.
Ordinances passed unanimously
Three new ordinances were also passed with full council support:
- Bill No. 2025 25: Amends Chapter 215 of the Municipal Code to limit the intake of animals at the Waynesville Saint Robert Animal Shelter to those originating within city limits unless special written agreements are in place with other jurisdictions.
- Bill No. 2025 26: Updates Chapter 111 to revise City Council committee titles and responsibilities, ensuring alignment with evolving city department functions.
- Bill No. 2025 27: Authorizes the Mayor and City Administrator to enter into a supplemental Airport Aid Agreement with the City of Saint Robert and the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission. This will increase funding and support the continued construction of the new Commercial Terminal Facility at the Waynesville Saint Robert Regional Airport.
Community safety reminder
As always, community safety remains a priority. Please drive carefully along Route 66, especially within city limits. We've had several accidents recently. While the causes are still under review, I remind everyone distracted driving is preventable. Stay alert, buckle up, and put your phones away. If you notice a problem in the city, whether it's a downed sign, pothole, or other issue, please call Central Dispatch at 573-774-2414, not 911, for non-emergency concerns.
