Waynesville is on the rise, and our community’s future has never been brighter. This spring, we have many exciting projects underway that will enhance our city’s infrastructure, safety and overall quality of life.
Airport terminal expansion at Fort Leonard Wood
The Fort Leonard Wood Airport Terminal Expansion project is progressing as planned. During our latest construction meeting, we confirmed that work is moving forward smoothly. While we always prepare for potential challenges, we are optimistic about progress. Currently, crews are removing trees and preparing the land for further construction. As the weather improves, more work will be completed. The project is expected to take approximately 340 days to finish.
Downtown Waynesville receives a new design feature
A new design wrap will be installed on the traffic control box at the intersection of Route 66 and South Benton Street, in front of Lone Oak Printing. This addition will serve as another visual attraction and informational point for visitors to learn more about our community.
This project has been in development for over a year as we worked through MoDOT approvals, design finalization and funding. The design will complement the Route 66 Shield, which will be placed directly across the street. A special thank you goes to Tim Barrier for his creativity and dedication in working with the city on this project.
Sidewalk Expansion Project – Phase II
The Route 66 Sidewalk Expansion Project is an important step toward improving pedestrian safety and accessibility in Waynesville. The city recently held a public notice meeting for Phase II, which will extend the sidewalk from Morgan Street to Ichord Avenue.
Phase I of the project covers the stretch from the bridge to Morgan Street, and Phase II extends from Morgan Street to Ichord Avenue. Both phases will begin after the construction bidding process is finalized. Though the projects are divided into phases, the construction work will take place concurrently to ensure efficiency and minimize traffic disruptions.
Additional upcoming sidewalk projects include improvements at the Ichord and Route 66 intersection, a sidewalk extension from Ichord Avenue to GW Lane, and new trail extensions to further enhance walkability throughout the city.
Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) updates
STIP, developed annually by MoDOT, includes several infrastructure upgrades for Waynesville. This summer, residents will see major improvements along Route 66, including the addition of new pedestrian crosswalks. These crosswalks will feature amber flashing lights that are button-activated, improving pedestrian safety.
One area of particular concern has been near the Pulaski County Courthouse, and we are pleased to report that upgrades in this location are already fully funded and scheduled for completion this year.
Community safety reminder
With warmer weather approaching, more children will be playing outdoors. I encourage all residents to drive carefully, obey speed limits, and come to complete stops at stop signs, especially in neighborhoods.
Unfortunately, there has been an increase in reports of reckless driving in residential areas. In response, law enforcement will be increasing patrols in these areas. If you witness reckless driving, please report it to the local authorities. We appreciate the community’s cooperation in keeping our children safe.
Free Tax Center continues to serve community
The Free Tax Center has been providing outstanding service to residents. It operates 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and follows federal holiday closure dates.
We encourage residents to take advantage of this free service and to share this information with those who may need assistance. For further inquiries, call 573-452-8624.
Waynesville and St. Robert earn national recognition
The Department of the Army has recognized Fort Leonard Wood, Waynesville, and St. Robert as winners of the 2024 Army Community Partnership Award. This award honors outstanding collaboration between military installations and local communities.
We will receive this prestigious award at The Pentagon this spring, which is a great honor for our city and a testament to the strength of our partnerships. Congratulations to all involved in making this achievement possible.
Roubidoux Park: Totem Pole update
Unfortunately, a vehicle accident caused damage to the totem pole in Roubidoux Park. We are currently exploring preservation options and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
Thank you to everyone who has reached out with concerns about this issue.
Upcoming event
Waynesville will host the Best Sapper Competition 9 to 11 a.m. April 26 at Roubidoux Park.
This event is a great opportunity for families to come out and support an exciting competition.
In preparation for this event, the park will be closed on April 12 for a full-dress rehearsal.
Thank you for your understanding as we prepare for this major event.
Thank You for your support
Waynesville continues to grow, and the progress we make is because of our dedicated residents, businesses and community leaders. Thank you for your commitment to making our city a wonderful place to live, work and thrive.
Stay engaged, stay safe, and I look forward to seeing you around town.
