Here is the Iberia High School girls’ basketball team after topping Crocker 46-41 in the Frisco League Tournament girls’ title game Saturday.
In an event that featured several upsets, it was the second-seeded Dixon boys and fourth-seeded Iberia girls who came out atop their respective fields at the annual Frisco League Basketball Tournaments, held last week at Laquey High School.
In the boys’ bracket, Dixon remained undefeated this season by stopping fourth-seeded Stoutland 69-57 in the championship game Saturday, Dec. 7. Also Saturday, in the third-place game top-seeded Crocker stopped sixth-seeded Plato 66-38 and in the fifth-place game third-seeded Licking got past eighth-seeded Laquey 85-64.
In the girls’ bracket, Iberia completed its unexpected run by stopping third-seeded Crocker 46-41 in the title game Dec. 7. Also Saturday, in the third-place game top-seeded Licking beat second-seeded Richland 49-31 and in the fifth-seeded game fifth-seeded Stoutland handled sixth-seeded Dixon/Newburg 56-32.
Boys’ Final
In the boys’ title game, the Dixon Bulldogs took the lead in the opening period and held it the rest of the way. Dixon outscored Stoutland 15-9 after the first quarter. Junior guard Drew Young netted nine points in the second quarter to help the Bulldogs tally 21 points in the period and take a 36-21 halftime edge.
The Stoutland Tigers closed their deficit in the third quarter, outscoring Dixon 16-12 and were trailing 48-37 heading into the final period. But the Bulldogs closed out the game strong with a 21-point fourth quarter, including a 7-of-13 performance from the free throw line.
Young and 6-5 senior forward Thomas McBride each had 17 points for the Bulldogs, still unbeaten at 5-0, while junior John Creamer added 12 points and sophomore M.J. Ford 10. Senior forward Landon Martin had a game-high 23 points and senior Aaron Franklin added 15 for Stoutland, now 4-1.
Girls’ Final
In the girls’ title game, Iberia held on despite a slow-down fourth quarter that featured a total of just five points.
The Iberia Lady Rangers had three players who scored 11 points – senior Acelyn Bauer, senior Chloe Edwards and senior Alexa Rowden.
Three players scored in double figures for the Crocker Lady Lions, led by junior guard Alivia Hayes’ 12 points.
Iberia, which upset Licking in the semifinals, improved to 4-0. Crocker is now 3-1.
