Taking control from the start, the top-seeded Dixon Bulldogs defended their Frisco League Boys’ Tournament championship by blasting second-seeded Stoutland 88-52 in the championship game Saturday, Dec. 6 at Laquey High School.
In other boys’ tournament games Saturday, sixth-seeded Iberia topped fifth-seeded Licking 45-34 in the third-place game while fourth-seeded Laquey got past third-seeded Newburg 60-51.
In semifinal games Thursday, Dec. 4, it was Dixon over Licking 69-51 and Stoutland over Iberia 74-60.
Championship Game - Dixon 88, Stoutland 52:Senior John Creamer got Dixon off to a fast start, netting 12 points over the first period to help the Bulldogs bolt to a 24-9 lead heading into the second quarter. Stoutland opened the second period with a 9-0 run, and a fastbreak layup by junior Jesse Dickinson at the 5:42 mark cut the Dixon edge to six, 24-18.
However, Dixon would end the half in a rush, outscoring the Tigers 14-3. And a fastbreak layup from junior guard MJ Ford off a steal by senior guard Drew Young ended the half and gave Dixon a 19-point halftime cushion, 51-32.
The Bulldogs reeled off 15 of the first 19 points in the third period to pull away, and a three-pointer from the left corner by Young at the 4:24 mark of the third quarter gave Dixon a 30-point advantage. Dixon’s lead would grow to as much as 36 points.
Four Bulldogs scored in double figures, led by Young with 27 points, Creamer with 18, sophomore forward Taylon Holzer 14 and sophomore guard Tripp Holzer 13. The Bulldogs hit 10 treys.
Junior Austin Pribble paced Stoutland with 17 points.
